Culture & Eco-Tourism The National Museum of Photography ‘Marubi’ Visit Project's Website Status Completed Budget Committed -- Preserving the Legacy of the Marubi Dynasty, Albania’s Pioneers of Photography The cultural and historical importance of Pietro Marubi’s work and the Marubi dynasty are unquestionable and serve as significant cultural markers. Albanian photography traces its origins to him, and many pivotal moments in Albania’s history have been immortalized through his photographs. The AADF, in collaboration with the Government of Albania, the Albanian Development Fund, and the European Commission, spearheaded the project for the new photography museum in Shkodra, which included physical renovations, enriching visitor experience, and the necessary technical capacity building to give life to a modern institution of cultural heritage in Albania. The National Museum of Photography ‘Marubi’ opened its doors to the public in May 2016 and has since become a prime destination for residents and visitors alike. Located in the pedestrian area of Shkodra, it offers a perfect synthesis of tradition and modernity, making it a must-see attraction for all. With more than 500,000 negatives dating back to 1856, the museum’s collection offers a glimpse into the history of Albania through the many characters and events depicted in the photographs. Marubi’s photographs not only capture the essence of Albanian culture but also serve as historical records, preserving important events for future generations.
