04/12/2024 Culture & Eco Tourism Tropoja’s Dance Joins UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List Tropoja’s Dance, a timeless and emblematic tradition from northern Albania, has officially been inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This ancient dance, known for its unique choreography, expressive movements, and vibrant rhythm, reflects the spirit and rich history of the Tropoja region. The AADF has been instrumental in achieving this remarkable milestone. In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Innovation, the AADF developed and supported the nomination dossier submitted to UNESCO. The proposal received positive evaluations from UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and was officially approved during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Asunción, Paraguay. Also referred to as “K’cimi” Tropoja’s Dance is a cultural treasure that has retained its vitality across generations. It incorporates elements of performing arts, rituals, and festive traditions, serving as a symbol of identity and unity for the people of Tropoja and the Highlands of Gjakova. This expressive dance is performed during significant social and ceremonial events such as weddings, engagements, and local festivals. Accompanied by traditional instruments like the drum, flute, and çifteli, and enhanced by colorful red and yellow scarves, the performances are a vibrant display of energy, joy, and cultural authenticity. The inclusion of Tropoja’s Dance on UNESCO’s list of Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity follows the successful inscriptions of the Xhubleta and Transhumance. This recognition is yet another significant achievement for AADF’s ongoing efforts to promote Albania’s cultural heritage globally. The initiative not only preserves the tradition for future generations but also highlights Albania’s rich cultural tapestry on the world stage. Gallery
