Culture & Eco-Tourism Butrint AIM Status On Going Budget Committed 5.95 million USD A New Vision for Butrint’s Management and Future Butrint stands as an exceptional blend of archaeological, cultural, and ecological wonders, earning global recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, followed by its designation as a National Park in 2000 and its status as a Ramsar site in 2002. In line with Albania’s cultural heritage reform, the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF), in partnership with the Albanian Ministry of Economy, Culture, and Innovation (MECI), is spearheading efforts to establish a pioneering management model for the archaeological area of Butrint National Park. This initiative aims to introduce an innovative management approach through the establishment of a community-based organization, the Butrint Management Foundation. Tasked with overseeing daily operations, implementing a comprehensive site business plan, and striving for carbon neutrality, this foundation aims to set a new standard for heritage sites management in Albania. Efficient management of the world heritage site of Butrint is essential for safeguarding its cultural, historical, and environmental significance. By promoting sustainable tourism practices, facilitating educational endeavors, fostering community involvement, and addressing potential threats, this model ensures the long-term integrity of this extraordinary site.
