A Model that Combines Conservation and Sustainable Tourism

The AADF is partnering with the Pogradec Municipality and the Government of Albania to develop the Drilon Tushemisht area into a tourist destination offering a variety of activities for visitors, while also focusing on long-term sustainability. The region is a vital component of the extensive Lake Ohrid and Prespa area, acknowledged by UNESCO as a Transboundary Biosphere Reserve in 2014. Moreover, the Albanian part of Lake Ohrid received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2019.

Within the relatively small geographic space of Drilon-Tushemisht lie two of Albania’s natural wonders: the Drilon Springs and Lake Ohrid. Complemented by traditional local houses, winding pedestrian paths, and stunning landscapes, these natural wonders create an enchanting oasis ripe with diverse opportunities for tourism development in the region.

Despite its immense potential, this ensemble largely remains undeveloped due to the absence of tailored tourism and commercial models. To address this challenge, the AADF is spearheading a project focused on architectural enhancements and comprehensive development plans for the area. The end goal is to attract investments that will unlock, promote, and maximize the potential of the region’s currently untapped or underutilized natural resources.

The primary objective of the project is to conserve the unique ecosystems while simultaneously promoting sustainable tourism development. Its goal is to stimulate economic growth by increasing both the number of visitors and their length of stay, thereby reinforcing local leadership. This contribution is intended to mitigate the impact of mass migration that has affected the Pogradec area.

Ultimately, the AADF aims to establish a sustainable tourism development model that can be replicated effectively in similar sites across Albania.
