The New Bazaar of Tirana: A BID/TID Success Story

In the array of BID/TID projects throughout the country, the capital city, Tirana, couldn’t be overlooked. The designated location was one of the most iconic landmarks which embodied a rich history.

The area encompassing the New Bazaar and Avni Rustemi Square in Tirana symbolizes the city’s traditional urban life and holds significant commercial value as a popular tourist destination. The area is home to over 15 sites of cultural heritage protected by law, which were once concealed beneath dilapidated facades, outdated infrastructure, and uninviting commercial spaces.

Nowadays, the New Bazaar has evolved into an ideal pedestrian mall and a prime tourism destination, where private businesses and public representatives are coming together under the BID/TID model. The AADF collaborated with the Government of Albania, including the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Urban Development, as well as the Municipality of Tirana and the local business community, to revitalize the New Bazaar and Avni Rustemi Square in Tirana.

The bazaar has transformed into one of the primary tourist attractions in the capital and a hub for the numerous major artistic events taking place in Tirana throughout the year.
