Boosting Business and Transforming the Old Bazaar of Gjirokastra

The unique architectural ensemble of Gjirokastra old town, with the harmonious coexistence of traditional manor houses, mosques, churches, and various other structures, has garnered the city its inscription on UNESCO’s World Heritage sites. Gjirokastra, known as the “city of stone,” is also a prime example of a vibrant and close-knit community, where residents and merchants are united by a strong sense of belonging and a culture of good neighborly relations.

Following the completion of the revitalization work along the old bazaar, the AADF established the Tourism Improvement District (TID Gjirokastra) Association, which is now managed through a cooperative agreement involving the AADF, the Municipality of Gjirokastra and the business community of the area.

TID Gjirokastra has a clear objective of increasing the number of overnight visitors to Gjirokastra and serves as a vital force in marketing and in the promotion of the city as a premier tourism destination in Albania.

The revitalization of the business climate, driven by an increased number of visitors and improved destination marketing, has created a promising momentum that will ensure a prosperous future for Gjirokastra.
