Reclaiming Korça’s status as a vibrant cultural and commercial hub

The city of Korça, located in the southeast of Albania, is renowned for its cultural significance, historical heritage, natural beauty, and substantial contributions to Albanian education and art. Notably, it is the sole city in the AADF portfolio to have benefitted from two BID/TID projects.

The AADF completed its intervention along Shen Gjergji Boulevard in the pedestrian area of the city in late 2012. The business community united through the BID model to revitalize the boulevard under the BID Korça association, ushering in a new era of prosperity not only for the area encompassing the business improvement district but also for the entire town. This project involved an investment of nearly $1 million, focusing on infrastructure improvement, business grant initiatives, capacity building, and support for the artistic scene within the BID area.

In 2016, the AADF reaffirmed its commitment to revitalizing long-neglected historical landmarks in the city of Korça. The Old Bazaar of Korça consists of a collection of trade, craft, and residential buildings, which hold substantial architectural and artistic values, dating back to the 19th century. They bear witness to the influential craftsmen and tradesmen who played a significant role in the country’s economic and social life.

The AADF collaborated with the Albanian government, the Municipality of Korça, and the local business community to revitalize the Old Bazaar, restoring it to its former splendor. It has now become one of the city’s most prominent tourist attractions and an essential destination for the majority of visitors. The AADF continued its support for businesses operating in the area by offering advisory services and small grants and by establishing the TID Korca business association.

The BID and TID Korça associations play vital roles in the daily management and oversight of the Old Bazaar and the pedestrian area, serving as central hubs for commerce and tourism in the city.
