TUMO and the Pyramid of Tirana

At the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF), we believe that creativity is the key to a better future. For us, the Pyramid of Tirana did not represent merely a painful reminder of the past, but rather an opportunity to create a center of innovation where Albania’s most creative minds can design the future.

Built in 1988 as a museum and mausoleum for former dictator Enver Hoxha, the Pyramid was one of the most powerful symbols of a closed and isolated era. After the 1990s, the building went through several functional changes, but for many years it remained underutilized, at the center of public debates over whether it should be demolished or preserved.

Its revitalization became possible thanks to the vision and investment of AADF, in cooperation with public institutions, to transform this iconic structure into a modern space dedicated to education and technology. The transformation, completed in 2023, preserved the building’s architectural identity while adapting it to the needs of a new generation. Today, with approximately 11,800 square meters of reimagined space, the Pyramid has evolved from a monument of the past into a vibrant and open community hub.

At the heart of this transformation stands TUMO Tirana, AADF’s flagship initiative for youth technology education. TUMO Tirana is part of the global network of the TUMO Center for Creative Technologies, an internationally recognized and innovative educational model.

Through this project, AADF invested not only in the physical restoration of a historic building, but in building a new educational ecosystem. Young people aged 12 to 18 have the opportunity to develop essential 21st-century skills such as animation, game development, graphic design, filmmaking, music production, 3D modeling, and robotics. The after-school program combines self-learning with hands-on workshops and real-world projects, enabling students to build professional portfolios from an early age.

The impact of this transformation extends far beyond the building’s walls. Today, the Pyramid is an open public space, with accessible exterior steps and collaborative environments that foster creativity and interaction. It represents a model of how strategic investment in education and technology can transform not only a physical structure, but also the outlook of an entire generation.

Thanks to AADF’s vision and the implementation of TUMO, the Pyramid of Tirana has become a symbol of transformation and innovation, proof that the past can be reimagined as the foundation for Albania’s digital future.
