The revival of one of Albania’s most historically significant cities

Durrës is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in Albania, with a heritage dating back over 2,600 years. The Integrated Management Plan aims to provide a sustainable strategy to rehabilitate this heritage by combining the restoration and protection of archaeological zones A and B in Durrës with the imperative for its economic development.

The AADF, in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Durrës, is embarking on its second project of this kind, aimed at revitalizing the city of Durrës following the devastation caused by the November 2019 earthquake.

Archaeological areas A and B encompass notable sites like the Roman Amphitheatre, the Byzantine Forum, the Roman Bath Complex as well as numerous other historically important structures.

The ultimate long-term goal of the Integrated Management Plan is to preserve the historical legacy of over 3,000 years of continuous settlement of the city of Durrës and ensure its accessibility for all. This involves highlighting its inherent value while balancing cultural heritage, tourism, and urban development.
