Integrated Management Plan of Durrës archaeological areas A and B

The Integrated Management Plan of Durres archaeological areas is the second of its kind to be undertaken by the AADF in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture within the framework of the new law in cultural heritage and museums.

The Project aims to provide a sustainable approach that integrates protection of the archaeological areas A and B with the need for economic development in the city. The Project is undertaken as a strategic intervention after the damage caused by the 6.4 magnitude earthquake registered in November 2019, and the need for a revival of Durres based on cultural tourism.

    Presentation of the Project idea for the valorization of the main archaeological monuments in the city of Durrës

    Durrës is the new image of the revival of historical values and revitalization of the city’s rich cultural heritage affected dramatically by the earthquake of November 2019.
    The Albanian-American Development Foundation together with the Ministry of Culture are collaborating to prepare the project design for the valorization of the main archaeological sites in the city.

    During the visit of the AADF Board of Trustees to the Ministry of Culture, the renowned European architect, Stefano Boeri presented the project idea on the revitalization of the Roman Amphitheatre of Durres along with the Byzantine Forum and the Roman Baths.

    The project will contribute to the restoration and reuse of the city’s cultural heritage and to the re-connection of the physical and visual links between historical and cultural assets. This will turn the urban heritage of the city into an inexhaustible tourist attraction in Albania and the region which will further boost the local economic development.

    Public hearing of the Integrated Management Plan of Archaeological Areas A and B of the City of Durrës

    On September 13th, 2022, a public hearing was organized in the city of Durres for the Integrated Management Plan of Archaeological Areas A and B of the City. This meeting was organized by the Ministry of Culture in cooperation with the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF) as the sponsor of this project. Present were representatives from state agencies, the local community, cultural heritage experts, local organizations, representatives of universities, and various stakeholders.

    The vision of the Management Plan is formulated in the perspective of the next fifteen years in the preservation and development of the cultural heritage of the city:

    “The legacy of over 3000 years of continuous settlement is preserved, accessible to all, and highlighted with all its values while maintaining the balance between heritage protection, tourism, and development.”

    The Management Plan was prepared by the Italian company ARS Progetti and funded by the AADF as a contribution to the city’s reconstruction efforts following the 2019 earthquake.

    The Minister of Culture of Albania and the AADF Co-CEOs visited TID Durrës prospective area, where AADF is supporting with preparation of project design

    The Minister of Culture of Albania, Ms. Elva Margariti, accompanied by the AADF Co-CEOs, Mr. Martin Mata and Mr. Aleksander Sarapuli, visited the TID Durres prospective area, which is supported by AADF with the preparation of project design. Project architects, engineers and experts presented to the guests the plans and proposition for transformation and revitalization of this important area.

    The TID Durres project design is sponsored by Albanian American Development Foundation in cooperation of Ministry of Culture and Durres Municipality.

    The TID Durres project aims to unlock Durres archaeological area full potential. It involves a physical and management transformation of the area, which not only increases its attractiveness but also alters its touristic offer for tourists and visitors.

    Meeting with stakeholders in Tirana and Durres for the Durres Integrated Management Plan of Durres Archaeological Areas A and B

    On 10-13 November 2020, the AADF organized a meeting between stakeholders and “ARS Progetti” company that is drafting the Durres Integrated Management Plan. Meetings were held at the central level with the Ministry of Culture, National Institute of Cultural Monuments, and local level with the Municipality of Durres, local NGOs, and Durres Museum Center.

    Accompanied by the AADF, the company representatives undertook a number of site visits in Durres and its surroundings. The purpose of these meetings and visits was to establish contacts with stakeholders and get to know more about the problems that archaeological areas A and B have in the city of Durres.

    Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for Integrated Management of the archeological area “A” & “B” Durrës, and creation of TID Durrës

    On June 9, 2020, the Albanian-American Development Foundation, the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Durrës signed the Memorandum of Understanding for the Integrated Management Plan for Archaeological Areas “A” and “B” of the city of Durrës, and the creation of the TID Durrës. The signing ceremony took place in the arena of the Roman Amphitheater of the II century AD.

    The aim of this partnership commitment is to provide a new and innovative perspective with tangible and measurable framework for the future sustainability of the area with a focus on the local community. The signing of the MoU will be followed by the drafting terms of reference for the Integrated Management Plan of the Archaeological Area “A” and “B” and the architectural project of the TID Durrës in this zone.
